For a second year, Jennifer Kilkenny of Total Social Solutions presented at the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery’s (ASDS) Annual Meeting. Sharing the mic with renowned New York City dermatologist Dr. Paul Frank and Brian Underwood, Beauty Director for Dr. Oz’s “The Good Life” and Editor for O Magazine, Jennifer presented on Reputation Management to a room of dermatologists and dermatology practice managers eager to understand how to navigate Yelp, Google, and other review sites.

Review sites like Yelp have a particularly shaky relationship with businesses across the United States; however, it’s particularly problematic for medical providers. Privacy laws governing medical marketing practices and responses to online reviews make managing online comments by patients difficult. While a restaurant may say just about anything in defense of a particularly scathing review (within reason), doctors (yes, even cosmetic physicians) must abide by HIPAA regulations when responding to both positive and negative comments and reviews online.

Privacy also makes obtaining positive reviews a difficult and sometimes uncomfortable process. Some patients are offended if asked to leave a review, because they do not want people to know they see a cosmetic dermatologist and have aesthetic treatments.

During the presentation, Jennifer provided tips on how to:

  • ask for reviews without the awkwardness
  • get more positive reviews
  • make sure good reviews “stick” on Yelp
  • respond to negative reviews

She also addressed changes to how Google reviews affect search engine optimization (SEO) and the importance of having a solid strategy to get more Google reviews to improve your position in the search engine results pages (SERPs).

In 2016, Jennifer gave a similar presentation, again on Reputation Management. On a panel alongside celebrity New York City dermatologist Dr. Doris Day, Jennifer presented tips for managing your online reputation, generating positive reviews, and responding to negative reviews at the 2016 ASDS Annual Meeting.
